Events: Sharing electricity (source: ČT24)
Those interested in sharing electricity can register with the Electricity Data Center (EDC) from Thursday. It marks the beginning of community energy in the Czech Republic, said representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and EDC. According to them, the center has started operating the system in a mode that already allows registration of interested parties and sharing. Full operation, which will also include electricity accumulation or aggregation services, is expected from the middle of 2026. Six hours after the start of registrations, around 1,200 requests for sharing have been submitted so far.
Households, municipalities and companies will be able to participate in community energy, in two modes. A simpler mode of active customer will enable the sharing of electricity between up to eleven transfer points across the country. Another option is energy communities, in which there can be up to a thousand transfer points in the contiguous territory of the administrative districts of no more than three municipalities with extended jurisdiction or in Prague. The general condition for sharing will be the installation of continuous electricity meters at all collection points, which distributors will carry out free of charge.
“The smart electricity meter will make it possible to send data on current consumption or production in 15-minute increments – and from that we will calculate the sharing,” said the chairman of the board of EDC Petr Kusý. The saving is in power electricity, which is not taken by the customer. According to the Ministry of Industry, it is also about better use of renewable resources.
“The EDC Order was legally approved this morning. With its adoption, the EDC was able to start its activities and can accept applications from those interested in sharing electricity,” said Stanislav Trávníček, chairman of the Council of the Energy Regulatory Office, on Thursday. The system was activated from 08:00 on Thursday.
Interested parties must register on the portal www.edc-cr.cz. “We will inform the applicant about the conclusion of the contract through a message sent no later than 20 days after receiving the application. We complied with the comments when approving the EDC Order and shortened this period from the originally considered 30 to a maximum of 20 days,” explained Kusý.
Telephone support
Simultaneously with the preparation of the main IT system in the past weeks, the center also created communication lines for interested parties, as well as video instructions and manuals. “Since the beginning of July, our call center on the phone number 800 720 204 has solved over a thousand phone calls. The operators spent more than 80 hours explaining all the details,” noted Kusý.
EDC now operates in a so-called temporary solution that enables community energy sharing of electricity between active customers, electricity producers and within energy communities. “Sharing electricity will allow a much wider group of consumers to use the benefits of renewable sources,” says lawyer Eliška Beranová from the Union of Community Energy.
The Minister of Industry and Trade, Jozef Síkela (STAN), pointed out that the government is now preparing another amendment to the Energy Act, which introduces rules for the accumulation, aggregation and flexibility of energy. “During the second half of 2026, together with the expansion of EDC functionality, this will offer additional opportunities to use renewable energy sources even more efficiently. Accumulation and flexibility will allow people and businesses to better manage their consumption,” he described.
