President Trump wrote on Twitter in the morning that “moder or vaccine has been overwhelmingly approved,” and “distribution begins immediately.”
The Vaccine and Biological Drugs Advisory Committee (VRBPAC), an FDA advisory body, held a meeting the day before, with a majority of 20 people in favor, 0 people against, and 1 abstention.
Although there were reports that the FDA would approve it as early as the day, there was no official announcement from the FDA until a tweet by President Trump was posted.
The FDA stated that it was still reviewing the data and did not approve it after a series of media inquiries.
It is unclear whether President Trump was aware of the FDA’s approval decision and made it in advance. However, considering that President Trump mentioned the word’overwhelming’, it is possible that he mentioned the results of the advisory committee the day before, which all but one voted in favor.
If approved by the FDA, Modena vaccine will be the second vaccine commercially available in the United States after Pfizer’s vaccine. US media such as Reuters predict that distribution of modders and vaccines will begin sooner or later.
