Commencement of work on an important project with a symbolic character for the recognition of the greatness of the sacrifice of the Heroes of the Epic ’40, which was a moral commitment of the Municipality of Pogoni.
The reason for the Fallen Memorial at the “Vourliasos” location, the signing of the contract of which was carried out by the Mayor of Pogoni, Mr. Konstantinos Kapsalis, and the representative of the contracting company “SARAKATSANOS A.T.E.”, Mr. Nikolaos Sarakatsanos.
The Memorial to the Fallen, which will be built at the beginning of the path to the top of the Fighter’s Hill, will pay tribute to the 13,976 fallen of the Epic of 1940 and is part of a big vision and planning of the Municipal Authority to build a “History Park” as a token of honor to those who fought and sacrificed for freedom and country.
“It is an important day for the Municipality of Pogoni, which fulfills its duty towards the Heroes who sacrificed themselves for the Fatherland and Freedom. In these soils, on which some of the most important pages of Greek history were written, we had to honor one by one the 13,976 Heroes of the Struggle. We thank the Hellenic Parliament and personally the President, Mr. Costas Tasoula, for financing part of the project,” said the Mayor of Pogoni, Mr. Konstantinos Kapsalis, during the signing of the contract.
The project has a budget of €1,250,000.00 including VAT. 24% and its funding comes partly from the Hellenic Parliament (€793,600.00) and the rest from the Pogoni Municipality’s own resources.
The main area of the monument consists of the Memorial Park, i.e. the area where the names of the heroes of fallen fighters are displayed, the event area which will consist of the wreath-laying monument and the small church, auxiliary areas and the parking area in the southern part next to it of the paved road. The Monument to the Fallen is a composition of 117 cubes on top of which 468 marble slabs are placed, one on each side of the cubes, which will include the 13,976 names of the fallen heroes.
