Lee Kyung-gyu’s team, the winning team of last year’s Netflix entertainment show ‘Comedy Royale’, which attracted a lot of attention, set the stage once again through ‘Comedy Revenge’.
Netflix’s entertainment show ‘Comedy Revenge’ is a comedy laughter battle in which ‘Comedy Royale’ winning team Lee Kyung-gyu sets the stage and K-comedy representatives compete and burst into laughter. It deals with the competition between the strongest comedies who have sharpened their swords to take Lee Kyung-gyu’s throne. It has been released on Netflix since October 15th.
Producer Kwon Hae-bom, who directed ‘Comedy Revenge’, recently met with reporters at the Kakao Entertainment building in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul and said, “‘Comedy Royale’ is a film where five masters come together to form their own talents with the catchphrase that players should join forces through comedy. “If it was a comedy competition format, this time, the winner of ‘Comedy Royale’, the absolute winner Lee Kyung-gyu, made a big splash and even stepped up with the production team and planning,” he said. “The biggest difference is that without a master, the six teams each have their own comedy style.” The point is that 22 comedians representing ‘K-comedy’, where people of the same name form teams and compete against each other, have gathered together. “It has expanded and developed,” he said, introducing the program.
Lee Kyung-gyu’s team (Master Lee Kyung-gyu, Lee Chang-ho, Uhm Ji-yoon, and Jo Hoon), who won the ‘Comedy Royale’, which attracted a lot of attention last year, once again provided laughter instead of the Netflix exclusive show that was the benefit of winning. Moon Se-yoon, Lee Yong-jin, Hwang Je-seong, Lee Sang-jun, Kwak Beom, Lee Seon-min, and Lee Jae-yul, who unfortunately missed out on the championship, as well as Park Na-rae, Kim Gyeong-wook, Kim Yong-myeong, and Mirage, who took on the challenge, will appear to take off their rank insignia and engage in a battle of revenge with their pride at stake.
Producer Kwon said, “I talked to and recruited people who felt that they did not fully demonstrate their skills in ‘Comedy Royale.’ As befits the fact that it represents ‘K-comedy’, many veterans participated as well as new characters who emerged in just one year. We proceeded with the casting by talking with Lee Gyeong-gyu. When a key person for each axis was recruited, a team was formed by recommending people who matched the person and sharing opinions. This time, the focus was on giving the comedy team a different color. He explained the background to recruiting the cast, saying, “We all had styles that suited us, including short form and short form, to compete.”
Regarding Lee Kyung-gyu, who is working with him on three consecutive works, including ‘Jjin Kyung-gyu’, ‘Comedy Royale’, and ‘Comedy Revenge’, he said, “I think it’s been about 4-5 years since I’ve been working with Lee Kyung-gyu. We became a lot closer through ‘Jin Kyung-gyu’. It was a program that delved deeply into Lee Gyeong-gyu’s life. At the end of ‘Jjin Kyung-gyu’, my daughter got married and I went to the wedding, and I knew almost all the guests. Although we crossed the line, I felt like we had become closer as we greeted the guests as if they were family. “It was that easy to talk to,” he said. “This time, we had to plan together, but we communicated well, and although there were discussions about which mission to show and which round to show, we were able to come to an agreement.”
In particular, Park Na-rae’s appearance as a member of the ‘Raspberry’ team became a hot topic. Regarding this, Park Na-rae said, “Actually, when Na-rae Park saw ‘Comedy Royale,’ she said that she had enjoyed ‘Comedy Royale’ through a close writer and said that it would be fun for me to do it myself,” and added, “But it is a time-consuming and risky work. I had a lot of worries. It is a risky challenge for people who do not need to prove themselves, such as Na-rae Park, Se-yoon Moon, and Lee Yong-jin. Nevertheless, I think I was drawn to the idea of being able to make someone laugh on stage. “I thought he was a born comedian,” he praised.
Regarding Kwon Beom, Lee Seon-min, and Lee Jae-yul of ‘Jannabi Summit’, the protagonists of the so-called ‘monkey incident’ in ‘Comedy Royale’, “Not only them, but everyone wanted revenge. I was burning with determination because I wanted to get revenge on Lee Gyeong-gyu’s team, not revenge. I talked a lot with Beom Kwak, who was the central character of Season 1. Kwak Beom was especially strong in his desire to take revenge with the two. If we come together as a team and don’t do well this time, it could mean we don’t have the skills. He expressed great confidence. The meeting time was the longest and I put in the most effort. I think it was the title and edition that suited them best. “It wasn’t necessarily a board that was laid for them, but I think they made a good board through their efforts,” he said.

Following ‘Comedy Royale’, controversy over the level of comedy continues in ‘Comedy Revenge’. Producer Kwon said, “Actually, I think the most important thing in comedy is toe the line well. On the other hand, if it falls far short of the line, it doesn’t seem to be fun. I think Netflix is open to the level, but that’s not true. All of the crude expressions that appear there are within the 15-year-old rating. Depending on the comedy, there may be viewers who feel a little uncomfortable or think it crosses a line, but I thought it walked the line well without making anyone too uncomfortable, and I edited it to make it look that way. Primary expressions are also the essence of comedy. He explained, “If you leave out those things to eliminate discomfort, the comedy often dies, so I sought an editing direction that would minimize discomfort rather than harm the comedy.”
He also mentioned comedian Lee Jin-ho, who caused controversy by admitting to illegal gambling just before the program was released. Jin-ho Lee appeared as the Deungchon-dong Lakers team with Moon Se-yoon and Kim Yong-myeong and completed all filming, but on the day of the production presentation, he revealed his illegal gambling, causing a nuisance to the program. After careful consideration, Netflix said, “Given the structure of the program, which is conducted as a group team competition, there are structural restrictions in which full editing of a specific team does not constitute the structure of the story. “We ask for your understanding,” he said, adding that he would not edit Jin-ho Lee’s appearance.
Regarding the decision not to edit Jin-ho Lee, PD Kwon said, “Jin-ho Lee did not participate in the program as an individual, but formed a team with Yong-myeong Kim and Se-yoon Moon, and comedy could not have been established without Jin-ho Lee. When teams were excluded, the program itself was damaged. “For the sake of the overall appearance of the program, I decided to go without editing,” he said. “Personally, I think Lee Gyeong-gyu did a good job of keeping the center of focus by being next to me. He said that this was Jinho Lee’s private life and that the program would not be shaken because of it, and I thought that was right. “To be honest, it was something we couldn’t deal with, so it was disappointing, but we couldn’t help it,” he confessed his feelings.
Will there be a season 3 following ‘Comedy Royale’ and ‘Comedy Revenge’? PD Kwon said, “First of all, we are unable to give a definite answer about Season 3. The key to Season 3 lies with the viewers rather than the production team. “I think it can be made if the viewers want it,” he said.
Lastly, PD Kwon said, “The best response was, ‘I have developed a respect for comedians.’ That was what I wanted to express most through this content. “In ‘Comedy Royale,’ I wanted to send a message about what good comedy is and that funny things aren’t funny, but in ‘Comedy Revenge,’ I wanted to show the comedian’s love and passion for comedy.”
He added, “Not everyone succeeds in comedy. We need to improve our batting average, but comedians are funny people, but they are not just funny people. It seems that there are people who think that if they are not funny, they can be criticized. Comedians can’t help but feel intimidated when they receive criticism. I wish people would look at comedy with a more open mind. I’m not asking you to call something that isn’t fun fun. I hope people don’t judge me for failing outright. “I hope people will look at us with a little more warmth and affection,” he said.
