The increase in employment insurance subscribers last month reached a record low since the outbreak of Corona 19 in the aftermath of the strengthened social distancing that has continued for the longest in history. During the credit card crisis in February 2004, the number of employment insurance subscribers rose only 138,000, and it faced the worst employment situation in 17 years.
According to the labor market trend released by the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 8th, the number of employment insurance subscribers in January was 13835,000, the lowest increase, an increase of 151,000 from the same month last year. After the outbreak of Corona 19, the trend of increase in employment insurance subscribers gradually recovered after reaching a low in May last year (155,000 people), when the aftermath of the first epidemic began in earnest, and remained at the level of 300,000 people from September to November. However, in December, when the distance to the third epidemic was elevated, it fell to 200,000 people and hit the bottom in January this year.
Kim Young-jung, head of the employment policy department of the Ministry of Employment, said at a briefing, “The aftermath of the third spread of Corona 19, which has been ongoing since December of last year, is reflected in the employment administration statistics in January of this year, and the employment situation is in a very difficult phase.”
The number of applicants for job-seeking (unemployment) benefits exceeded 200,000 for the first time with 212,000. They applied mainly from public administration, business services, manufacturing, construction, and health welfare.
Kim said, “There seems to be an aftermath of the increase in job-seeking benefits applications, which caused a lot of unemployed people due to Corona 19.” The Ministry of Employment and Employment announced that it would cut off the decline in employment by intensively investing a job budget worth 30 trillion won this year in the first quarter. For eight special employment support industries, such as businesses that are struggling with collective restrictions and travel businesses, the employment maintenance subsidy will be provided up to 90% of the temporary suspension allowance.
