[서울Pn] Gangnam “Samseong-dong GBC Wonan-daero should be built with 105 floors”… Design change backlash

Hyundai Motors Review Height Changes for Cost Savings
Opposition to concerns about disruptions such as Yeongdong-daero development plan
“You must not forget the future value for immediate benefit”
1.25 million jobs and 268 trillion won expected economic effect

Jeong Soon-gyun, Gangnam-gu Office Chief

“We must not forget the value of investment for the future in order to pursue the immediate reality.” (Jeong Soon-gyun, head of Gangnam-gu, Seoul)

Gangnam-gu and Gangnam-gu residents oppose the change in the design of Hyundai Motor Group’s Samsung-dong Global Business Center (GBC) project. Changing GBC’s design to cut costs right now is not only breaking promises with the community but also undermining the city’s future competitiveness.

On the 20th, Mayor Jeong Gu said, “It is reasonable to build the GBC of Hyundai Motor as a future investment project that will lead the national economy and as a symbol of the next 100 years,” and that the construction of GBC should be carried out according to the original plan.

According to the original GBC basic and detailed design proposal, Hyundai Motor Group exhibited 1 tower building with 7 floors below ground to 105 floors above ground and 1 building for accommodation and business facilities at the former KEPCO site (74,148㎡) in Samseong-dong, with the goal of completion by 2026. · It was planned to construct a total of 5 buildings including a convention and a performance hall. GBC is the core of the International Exchange Complex, which is a focus development project in Seoul that combines the Yeongdong-daero complex development and Jamsil MICE complex.

In addition, as the extension of the Samsung Station Complex Transit Center from Suseo Station on the Suseo High Speed Rail (SRT) is possible, the underground space of GBC, COEX, and Yeongdong-daero are connected to the underground space, which is expected to be the world’s largest underground city with various convenience facilities and commercial facilities. . When Hyundai Motor Group purchased the KEPCO site in September 2014, Honorary Chairman Chung Mong-koo also said, “It is an essential investment for the future and we are looking forward to 100 years.”

However, recently, Hyundai Motor Group is considering dividing the tower into two to three buildings by lowering the tower height to 60-70 floors for reasons of cost reduction and practicality. In this case, GBC will not be able to play a proper role as a landmark, and job creation in the region and the Yeongdongdae development plan will inevitably be disrupted. “The construction of GBC is expected to create 1.25 million jobs and create an economic effect of 268 trillion won, along with a large-scale development project in Yeongdong-daero.” We must not forget the value of our investments for the future that enhances the chain effect.”
