Today, the court’s first judgment about the criminal responsibility of the Coast Guard command, which was controversial during the Sewol ferry disaster, was controversial, right?

Yes, the Seoul Central District Court will hold a trial for the first trial of 11 former maritime police commanders, including former Maritime Police Commissioner Kim Seok-gyun, at 2 PM.

During the Sewol ferry disaster in 2014, former Commissioner Kim and others were accused of killing 303 people and injuring 142 people for failing to perform their rescue duties, such as not properly commanding the escape of passengers.

Among the accused, former Mokpo Coast Guard Chief Kim Moon-hong is also suspected of manipulating the details of the action and reporting it to the Maritime Police Headquarters as if he had broadcast abandonment to 123 boats in order to conceal the failure of the initial action.

At the decision hearing held last month, the prosecution asked former Commissioner Kim Seok-gyun for five years of imprisonment, as well as imprisonment for 10 other people, including former chief executive officer Kim Soo-hyun and former chief executive officer Kim Moon-hong.

The prosecution emphasized that the serious consequences of the deaths of more than 300 people as a result of a combination of the accused’s failure to fulfill their duties at the time, in particular, emphasized that the final officer, former Chief Kim, should be held strict responsibility.

Regarding this, in his final statement, Chief Commissioner Kim appealed to the court to separate his ethical and moral responsibilities and legal responsibilities, saying that although there were many regrets and deficiencies, he made every effort to save even one more person.

In connection with the Sewol ferry disaster, there is only one maritime police official who has been criminally punished so far.

The family members of the victims of the Sewol ferry will also appear in court and watch the sentence.

So far, the Seoul Central District Court has delivered it.
