[메디컬투데이=이승재 기자] Research results have shown that time-restricted diets are effective in reducing fat mass and improving cardiovascular and metabolic health.

The results of a study examining the effects of a time-restricted diet on cardiovascular and metabolic health were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Recently, a diet called ‘time-restricted diet’ has become popular due to its effectiveness in dieting. This diet, similar to fasting, includes eating only between 8 and 12 hours of the day.

Previous research has shown that time-restricted diets have health benefits, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, improved triglyceride levels, improved cognitive function, anti-aging, and improved insulin sensitivity.

Researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the University of California San Diego studied the effects of a time-restricted diet on cardiovascular and metabolic health in a randomized controlled trial of 108 adults.

The study participants were divided into two groups. One group (the control group) was asked to follow the Mediterranean diet, a type of healthy food, and the other group was asked to eat only for 8 to 10 hours of the day in addition to these guidelines. The researchers followed and observed the study participants for three months.

The results of the study showed that the group that followed the restricted diet lost more weight than the control group. Most of the weight loss was accounted for by fat. This suggests that a time-restricted diet is a diet with a low risk of muscle loss due to weight loss. In addition, although it was small, the reduction in fasting blood sugar and levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was higher in the group that followed the time-restricted diet.

Based on these results, the researchers concluded that a time-limited diet not only reduces the amount of fat but also has a positive effect on cardiovascular and metabolic health.
