Hanyang University will establish a specialized research institute focusing on quantum, artificial intelligence (AI), and defense fields within the year. As the status of ‘K Defense Industry’ rises in the global defense industry market, Hanyang University intends to be at the forefront of promoting the defense industry through cooperation with leading domestic companies.

Byun Jung-moo, head of Hanyang University’s Business-Academic Cooperation Center (pictured), met with Mael Business Newspaper at Hanyang University’s Hanyang Institute of Technology (HIT) on the 27th and said, “We plan to ‘ Quantum, AI, established. and Defense Specialist Research Institute’ as early as this year.” He said, “We plan to establish a specialized research institute by 2035.” “We will develop it into the MIT Lincoln Lab in Korea,” he said.

MIT Lincoln Lab is the world’s leading defense research laboratory created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It was established in 1951 to build America’s air defense system. MIT Lincoln Lab has achieved remarkable results by expanding the scope of research not only to military research but also to the development of communications, networks and software. The technology gathered at Lincoln Lab led to the ARPANET project at MIT and contributed to the birth of the Internet.

Director Byun said, “We will introduce a corporate membership system at Hanyang University’s Institute of Quantum Research, AI, and Defense Specialization.”

The corporate membership system works in a way that companies that need technology in the research field provide some research funds, and then the researcher provides research results, technology consulting, etc. Companies will be able to reduce the time and cost required for innovative research, and universities will be able to carry out new research by receiving technology research funds.

Hanyang University has already successfully established corporate membership through the first dedicated research institute. The 1st Specialized Research Institute operates a total of 21 centers under 4 research institutes, including energy and environment, bio-, semiconductor, and population issues, and conducts joint research with various companies.

In particular, Hanyang University intends to focus the abilities of its specialized researchers on convergence research. Director Byun said, “MIT Lincoln Lab started research in the field of defense, but it has also succeeded in convergence research in connection with various fields such as communication and information technology (IT),” adding , “Quantum, AI, and Defense Specialization of Hanyang University. The Research Institute is also based on the results of collective research. ” “We will become a world-class researcher,” he said.

Hanyang University decided to establish a general operating committee as a control tower to oversee the special research institute where joint research will be conducted at the Seoul Campus and Erica. Lee Ki-jeong, President of Hanyang University, is the chairman.

Previously, in February, Hanyang University signed a business agreement (MOU) with the Navy for technological exchange and support necessary for the development of naval weapons systems.

Hanyang University is currently conducting research in the areas of naval weapon systems and underwater communication and detection through the Future Ocean Research Center. As soon as a specialized research institute is established in the defense industry, it is expected that technological exchanges with other research institutes, such as the Future Ocean Research Center, will increase significantly.
