How did this meeting go?

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida met in Bangkok, Thailand, where the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit will be held.

The summit started about 15 minutes later than expected and lasted 45 minutes.

Arriving at the meeting place first, President Xi met Prime Minister Kishida and shook his hand with a smile.

In his remarks at the summit, Xi stressed the importance of China-Japan relations, saying “the world has entered a turbulent and revolutionary period”.

Let us first listen to President Xi’s remarks.

[시진핑 / 중국 국가주석 “중국과 일본은 많은 공통의 이익과 협력할 공간이 있습니다. 중일 관계의 중요성은 변하지 않았고 변할 수 없습니다.]

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida also revealed that the two countries have many outstanding challenges and problems as well as many possibilities for cooperation.

Let’s listen together to all the remarks of Prime Minister Kishida.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi were present at the meeting.

It is the first time in three years since the Korea-China-Japan summit held in Beijing in December 2019 that the leaders of China and Japan have met face-to-face and had a bilateral meeting.

Prime Minister Kishida revealed the contents of this meeting in a press conference some time ago, right?

What kind of discussions have been had on the North Korea and Taiwan issues?

[기자]

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida said at a press conference some time ago that he had a sincere exchange of views with President Xi.

Regarding North Korea’s nuclear and missile issues at this meeting, Prime Minister Kishida said, “I look forward to China’s role, including in the United Nations Security Council.”

However, the Chinese government maintains a position it will not actually come forward, saying, “We hope that North Korea’s reasonable concerns will be resolved in a balanced manner.”

Prime Minister Kishida also said that peace and stability in Taiwan are important and that the two leaders agreed to strengthen communication in the security field.

Furthermore, they were of the same opinion that there should be no Russian nuclear use in Ukraine, the prime minister added.

At this summit, we agreed to accelerate cooperation in mutually beneficial areas, such as environment and medical care, as well as security.

In particular, Japan has called on China to promptly lift restrictions on Japanese food, and has also expressed its position on the Senkaku Islands issue, which is under territorial sovereignty dispute.

Prime Minister Kishida commented the meeting as “a good start to continue the dialogue to build a constructive and stable relationship”.

The Chinese side is also expected to take an official position on the summit in the form of a statement.

It remains to be seen whether bilateral relations, which have deteriorated during the US-China conflict, will reach a tipping point with this summit.
