According to an analysis of the flight price comparison flight.idealo.de, booking inquiries for air travel to the USA are picking up as expected after the entry stop for vaccinated people has been lifted. New York City in particular is in demand: traditionally, interest in the Big Apple is particularly high at Christmas. Also this year the booking inquiries for flights in the Christmas week are 64 percent higher than in the week before. Nevertheless, demand is far from being back at pre-crisis level: flight.idealo.de determined an 80 percent lower rate for flights to New York over Christmas than in 2019.
In terms of price, travelers to New York will have to dig deeper into their pockets this year than they did in 2019. For Christmas week (calendar week 51), the average price for a return flight at the time of the data query * was 372 euros and thus five percent above that of 2019. If you want to fly to New York over New Year’s Eve, you currently have to pay around 23 percent more than in 2019 (372 euros instead of 301 euros).
Other popular destinations in the United States are also seeing price increases. For a return flight to Las Vegas this year, for example, travelers will have to pay 11 percent more than in 2019 over Christmas and even 24 percent more at the turn of the year. However, some destinations in the United States are currently cheaper than they were before the crisis. For example, travelers can get to Miami cheaper in the last two weeks of the year: Here they pay an average of 17 or 10 percent less than before the pandemic.
