eDreams ODIGEO, Europe’s largest online travel portal and one of the largest European e-commerce companies, publishes the results of its global “A Year in Travel Report”*, which provides insights into the changed travel behavior, the current mood towards travel and the future plans of vacationers in times of and after Covid-19. The study looked at the past months as well as current and future travel trends.

Short haul meets last minute: This is how Germans traveled in 2021

The year 2021 and the Covid-19 pandemic changed many areas of life forever – with a particular impact on the plans and intentions of travelers around the world. We look back on a year that was not only marked by measures and lockdown, but above all, thanks to increasing vaccination rates, gave hope for future travel adventures. Last year, almost half of all Germans (46%) said that they consider a vaccine against Covid-19 to be necessary before booking a trip abroad again. **

The Germans are once again more courageous to travel beyond the German borders: 96% of travelers from Germany decided to take a break with our European neighbors this year.

Once again, the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca was particularly popular and conjured up a nice change from everyday life with its white beaches, sunny weather and exciting activities. Turkey also welcomed many visitors from Germany this year: With Istanbul, Antalya and Izmir, three destinations get a place among the top 5 holiday destinations.

The 10 most popular holiday destinations from 2021:

  1. Palma de Mallorca
  2. Istanbul
  3. Antalya
  4. Barcelona
  5. Izmir
  6. Lisbon
  7. Heraklion
  8. Wien
  9. Rom
  10. London

Goodbye Germany!

Especially in comparison with the European neighbors such as France, Italy or Spain, the first differences to the German travelers, who will accompany the travel industry beyond the calendar year, are becoming apparent. German vacationers are already more open to extensive relaxation and 38% have enjoyed a vacation of up to 14 days. In France and Italy, only one in three (FR: 33%, IT: 29%) opted for two weeks of comfortable relaxation, in Spain it is only 23% of all travelers. Travel habits have changed significantly, with the majority of Germans preferring last-minute bookings again this year (36% book 0-15 days before departure) instead of planning several weeks in advance.

Not only in terms of duration, but also when it comes to the holiday destination, people are still not in agreement. If the majority of Germans want to go beyond their own national borders this year, 74% travel within Europe and one in four even intercontinental (24%), many European travelers are even more hesitant. In Spain, 57% explore the national treasures and only a third of all Spaniards (34%) travel within the EU. In Italy, too, people appreciate the local sights: From the Dolomites high in the north to the picturesque cliffs in Sicily, every: r second Italian: in (52%) stays true to their home leave for the time being.

Pablo Caspers, Chief Travel Officer of eDreams ODIGEO, says: “Since the beginning of 2021 we have seen that our customers’ desire to travel is unbroken – our results even show that they are still dreaming and planning their next vacation despite travel restrictions. And so we have encouraging figures today: In the months of June to August we were able to achieve values that are above the level of pre-COVID, and we even recorded a booking high during our Prime Days in October.

We at eDreams ODIGEO are proud of our work over the past two years: We have reinvented travel for our customers, offered innovative solutions and expanded our product range for a group of customers who had to redesign their travel habits. The situation is improving day by day and we are emerging stronger from this difficult time. “
