45468 MH.-Altstadt II:

This morning (May 21) at 8:25 a.m., the emergency call of the Essen police was informed that a person was being attacked and beaten on the cycle route near the Alte Malzfabrik.

When the suspect left the man and fled, the person making the call followed him on the bike to inform the police of his current whereabouts. The suspect was arrested a short time later near the main train station. The 36-year-old suspect is a Lebanese citizen and lives in Mülheim an der Ruhr.

In the meantime, an emergency doctor took care of the 80-year-old, who was critically injured in the attack. The man was taken to a hospital.

A homicide squad was set up. This is looking for more witnesses. It is possible that, among other things, passengers in an S-Bahn that runs parallel to the cycle route made important observations. Witnesses are asked to call 0201 / 829-0.

The background to the act is currently still unclear. Shortly before the attack, the 36-year-old suspect was noticed by a family on Delle Street. However, there was no criminal act there. In the past few weeks, the suspect has appeared to the police several times – among other things because of dangerous bodily harm and threat./SyC
