More than 21,000 corona deaths, three months of lockdown, economy and culture on the ground, high unemployment and then the mass protests against police violence and racism: The metropolis of New York is facing the greatest challenge in its history. And it is still completely unclear when, whether and how the city will recover and what the new New York will look like. The “Auslandsjournal” documentary “New York – Comeback after Corona?” reports on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, 10.15 p.m. on ZDF.
In the “Auslandsjournal” document, ZDF New York correspondent Johannes Hano meets people who are looking for ways out of the crisis and for whom it is clear that there will be no turning back, that New York will have to reinvent itself in order to be able to enter to exist in the future. He meets artists, shopkeepers, realtors and big business representatives who talk about their vision. He accompanies local politicians, police officers and families whose children have been killed by police violence who are looking for answers on how to overcome the ubiquitous racism.
New York City has always been an experimental laboratory for social developments, a magnifying glass for social and economic conflicts and challenges. The answers that this city delivers radiate into the whole world – because the whole world is at home in New York.
