Residents, commuters and visitors in Münster are most satisfied with their personal mobility situation. That is the result of the current ADAC monitor “Mobil in der Stadt”: The extensive study examines the satisfaction of the people with the respective mobility situation in 29 medium-sized cities. The ratings of drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users are both considered individually and combined into an overall index. In last place in the rankings is Mönchengladbach.

A look at the overall result shows that the front runners – Münster followed by Rostock and Oldenburg – achieve a relatively high level of satisfaction across all modes of transport. In the cities in the lower tiers, however, all the people who move there – no matter how – are more critical. ADAC Traffic President Gerhard Hillebrand: “These results show how important it is to have integrated traffic planning that takes the needs of all road users into account.”

Satisfaction among pedestrians and public transport users is highest across all cities. Cyclists are somewhat less satisfied. In all cities, drivers are the least satisfied with their personal mobility situation.

The negative assessment of the behavior of cyclists by pedestrians and motorists is striking. However, there is also a need for optimization in the assessment of the behavior of drivers by cyclists and in the behavior of drivers among one another – in this relationship, satisfaction and dissatisfaction are just in balance.

ADAC Traffic President Hillebrand: “In order to improve the traffic climate, it is necessary to supplement construction measures on roads and cycle paths with campaigns and public relations work in order to involve the citizens in the measures. In addition, respect and mutual consideration should be a matter of course for all road users.”

The road users in Mönchengladbach are the least satisfied with their personal mobility situation. The city is well ahead of Krefeld and Wuppertal in 29th and last place. After all, satisfaction with personal mobility also predominates in these municipalities, because all three receive a positive index value in the assessment. In Mönchengladbach, however, every satisfied road user has almost one dissatisfied one.

Around 12,000 interviews were evaluated in the representative online survey. The ADAC Monitor can provide cities with a basis for optimizing their mobility planning and adapting it to the needs of the users.
