Two borrowers who take out a loan together usually receive cheaper interest rates than one person. Nevertheless, married couples mostly do not take out a loan together and thus forego a possible improvement in the loan conditions. Only 32 percent of married borrowers took out a loan for two in 2020.1)
“Many married couples miss out on better terms for their loan”says Christian Nau, Managing Director Loans at CHECK24. “Banks often offer improved interest rates for loans for two, so married borrowers should take advantage of this and save costs.”
By borrowing in pairs, consumers save up to 600 euros in interest
In 2020, individuals paid an APR of 4.01 percent for a loan of EUR 10,000 with an 84-month term. For a jointly taken out loan with the same loan amount and term, 3.08 percent were due. This means an improved interest rate of 23 percent and reduced interest costs by 345 euros. 2) With a loan amount of 20,000 euros, the interest also fell by 23 percent, the interest costs even by 612 euros.
“Two borrowers mean a lower risk of default for the bank because both are fully liable”says Christian Nau, Managing Director Loans at CHECK24. “This is usually rewarded with better interest rates. In addition, the greater financial leeway enables higher loan amounts and increases the likelihood of acceptance.”
The process of joint borrowing is no different from an application by an individual. Once the key data of the financing project are in place, the borrowers can compare different offers online and submit a loan request from home. It is important that both parties are jointly and severally liable for the joint loan – regardless of whether they are couples, relatives or friends. So in the full amount of the loan.
A digital loan agreement saves you going to the post office or bank branch
Since the beginning of 2017, CHECK24 has made it possible to take out a loan completely digitally. The handwritten signature and the sending of the loan agreement to the bank are no longer necessary. The identity check is also carried out from home, using the digital identification process – this is not only convenient, especially in times of Corona, but also secure.
