A forest fire in the Wengern district had kept the volunteer fire brigade Wetter (Ruhr) busy since the early hours of the morning. The extinguishing units Wengern, Esborn, Alt-Wetter and Grundschöttel were alerted at 05:02 a.m. in the street “Am Brasberg” by both radio signal receivers and sirens. When the first forces arrived, there was a fire in the area between the sports hall and the sports field on an area of about 2,000 square meters. After the emergency services had laid a roughly one kilometer long hose line for water supply through partly rough terrain, the fire fighting could be initiated on site with several jet pipes. Due to the strong smoke development, the extinguishing operation was partially carried out under respiratory protection. Since the fire had spread to the roots of some trees, chainsaws were used to expose the embers. After the fire was under control, the forest floor was extensively slurried with water and partially dug up. The recently acquired forest fire equipment proved to be very useful. The firefighters were once again supplied with sandwiches by the “Backhaus Witten” at the site. The adjoining AWO kindergarten made coffee available. “A big thank you to both institutions for this,” said a spokesman for the Feuerwehr Wetter (Ruhr). In collaboration with a municipal caretaker, the adjacent gym was made available so that the sanitary facilities could be used there.
During the investigation, a member of the fire brigade fell and injured his hand. After the first aid from the municipal emergency services, the fireman went to further medical treatment on his own.
After the extensive clean-up and cleaning work, the last emergency services were able to end the assignment at 12:30 p.m.
For the duration of the extinguishing work, basic protection for the urban area was ensured by the Volmarstein and Grundschöttel extinguishing units.
