Signed an exclusive agreement with Energoatom to introduce AP1000® technology in Ukraine
Westinghouse Electric Company and Energoatom, the Ukrainian state energy supplier, have signed an exclusive contract for the delivery of Westinghouse AP1000® reactors to several locations in Ukraine. The signing of the historic agreement took place at the Department of Energy’s headquarters in Washington, DC, in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko.
Energoatom selected Westinghouse’s AP1000 technology to develop new nuclear power plants in Ukraine in line with its long-term strategy. With the exclusive agreement, Westinghouse and Energoatom reaffirm their intention to build more AP1000 reactor projects and help the country achieve its decarbonization goals through the use of clean, reliable and inexpensive nuclear energy.
“In the long term, the use of US-American AP1000 technology – a proven Gen III + reactor design with an output of around 1100 MW with passive safety systems and unique features such as standardization that reduces construction time and costs – will enable Energoatom to achieve the highest level of safety to ensure reliable nuclear power generation, innovation and environmental protection, “said Petro Kotin, acting president of NNEGC Energoatom.
“Westinghouse is proud to support Ukraine’s current reactor fleet with our industry-leading fuels and services. This agreement further strengthens our longstanding partnership with Energoatom. Using the world’s leading nuclear reactor to meet the country’s long-term energy needs is critical to a future with carbon-free energy for Ukraine, “said Patrick Fragman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse.
The AP1000 system is a proven Gen III + reactor. It has unique fully passive safety systems, a modularized standard design, high operational performance and the ability to track loads. The technology will provide procurement, construction, licensing, operation, maintenance and localization advantages to Energoatom and Ukraine.
Westinghouse AP1000 technology is the only Generation III + reactor technology that has been licensed by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and in several countries in Europe and Asia. Four AP1000 units set performance records in China for commissioning and the duration of fuel element replacement shutdowns, and that with excellent capacity. In the USA, two AP1000 blocks are about to be completed at the Vogtle location. The AP1000 technology was selected for a six block project in India and is being considered by several countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Asia and utilities in the US.
Westinghouse Electric Company is the world’s leading nuclear power company and a leading supplier of products and technologies for nuclear power plants to utilities around the world. Westinghouse delivered the world’s first commercial pressurized water reactor in 1957 in Shippingport, Pennsylvania, USA.
