In 135 other cities, the Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has sent formal applications for cycle paths to be implemented at short notice. In the applications, the DUH calls for car lanes to be rededicated in pop-up cycle paths and traffic-calmed streets, and Tempo 30 to be introduced in urban areas. At the end of January, the DUH had already submitted formal applications in 101 cities. In addition, the Environment and Consumer Protection Association has called on people to name cities and municipalities in which the DUH should submit formal applications. Numerous people have already responded to this call with over 1,200 suggestions. The DUH has now submitted applications in 236 cities. More than 80 municipalities have already responded.

The DUH calls on all people suffering from the sheet metal avalanche to go under www.duh.de/pop-up-radwege-jetzt to name other cities and municipalities in which pop-up cycle paths and footpaths and Tempo 30 are to be introduced as soon as possible. The newly sent applications are aimed at municipalities that the DUH had received from citizens.

Jürgen Resch, federal manager of the DUH: “The overwhelming feedback and the numerous suggestions received show us that people are calling for better protection for pedestrians and cyclists and for cars to be pushed back in our cities. Although more and more cyclists are on the streets, there are in most German cities no sufficiently wide, structurally demarcated, protected cycle paths. The Netherlands and Denmark show us that there is another way. With our campaign “Pop-up cycle paths now!” we want to double the cycle paths and cut the number of cars in half. Bonn, Lemgo and Leverkusen, for example, have already put the respective motions on the agenda of the responsible committees. “

So far, it has taken up to ten years from the first planning to the actual establishment of new cycle paths. Since last year, the DUH has been campaigning for the possibility of pop-up cycle paths that can be implemented at short notice. Berlin – but also a few other cities – have shown that it is actually possible to rededicate traffic areas within a few weeks or months – from motorways to secure cycle paths. This rapid pace of the mobility transition must become standard.

Since the car lobby ran a storm against the DUH campaign for pop-up cycle paths last year and claimed to the municipalities that these were not legally feasible, the DUH commissioned a legal opinion with which the cities and municipalities demonstrated get how pop-up cycle paths and comprehensive 30 km / h zones can be implemented in the city center in a legally secure manner. The expert opinion of the law firm Geulen & Klinger confirms that this procedure, which was tested for the first time in the context of the corona pandemic, is also permissible regardless of considerations relating to infection protection law.
