The time has come on February 8, 2021 at 8:15 pm: RTL will broadcast the finale of the current anniversary season “Undercover Boss”. This time Niklas Köllner, managing director of the household goods manufacturer WENKO-Wenselaar from Hilden near Düsseldorf, will be there. WENKO has become known and grown with products for the bathroom, kitchen, laundry and living areas, which can be bought in hardware stores, furniture stores and also online. More than 5,000 products belong to the range of the household goods experts, who employ 470 people. Every year, 25 million articles leave the WENKO warehouse. Disguised as the alleged TV candidate André Kullmann, the managing director of the family business in the 3rd generation went through various departments as an undercover boss and had to master a number of challenges. Niklas Köllner alias André Kullmann, for example, worked up a sweat on his ward in the warehouse. He gained valuable knowledge while doing merchandising in a hardware store. And as an assistant for a product shoot, he realized how difficult it is to take perfect photos. And showed rather less talent.
“One or the other little mistake happened to me too!”
The preparations and the shooting of the popular season did not pass the WENKO boss without a trace. He still has a scar to this day – caused by a small injury during the shoot that also caused some blood to flow. For several days, Niklas Köllner was fully involved with the undercover boss. Even now – a few weeks later – he hasn’t quite got his original hair color back. “I had to dye my hair light blonde for my assignment,” he says. “And everyone who dyes their hair knows: it takes time for that to grow out!” A visit to the dentist, who gave the 44-year-old other teeth in the form of a set of teeth, also included a visit to the dentist. “Teeth reveal a lot about a person,” says Niklas Köllner. “I wasn’t aware of that before.” What was still missing was a new outfit and a suitable car – then finally we could start. The WENKO boss didn’t feel comfortable in his role as André Kullmann at the beginning. “It took me some time to get used to my role,” he says of the shoot. “One or the other mistake happened to me too. Let’s see what of it can be seen in the episode,” he adds with a wink.
“Sometimes I was close to tears, that’s how touched the shoot”
The best experience for WENKO boss Köllner, however, were the encounters with his employees. “Some of the moments were so emotional,” he reports. “Side by side with them, I unloaded trucks, sorted returns, or stocked shelves in the hardware store, to name just a few examples. You automatically learn a lot. There were touching life stories and fates that sometimes brought tears to my eyes. I’m very grateful that I was able to experience that. But I don’t want to reveal more at the moment, otherwise it won’t be exciting anymore. ” For the WENKO boss, who runs the family business together with his brother Philip, one thing is certain: “I can rely on our employees, they all do their best. Is there anything nicer?” And of course the managing director wants to change one thing or another in the company. “Because that’s why I liked being undercover boss.”
