Egyptian Car Market Faces Unprecedented Crisis Due to Global Chip Shortage
August 16, 2023 – In a recent statement, Osama Abu El Magd, the President of the Car Traders Association, confirmed that the Egyptian car market is currently facing a severe and unprecedented crisis. This crisis is attributed to various local and global factors, with the shortage of electronic chips being the most prominent.
Speaking at the Motor One Luxury Car Exhibition, Abu El Magd stated that the recent surge in car launches, with nearly 10 new models introduced in the past two months, does not reflect a market recovery or the end of the year and a half-long crisis.
He emphasized that it is more important for car dealers to have the ability to provide these new models according to the market’s needs and in a timely manner, not exceeding three months.
Abu El Magd further highlighted that the car market is currently experiencing a real catastrophe, with sales declining by approximately 70% in the first half of 2023. This is an unprecedented decline in Egypt’s history.
Regarding the prevalence of overpricing in the local car market, Abu El Magd stated that this phenomenon is not limited to the automotive sector but also affects the market for electrical appliances, electronics, and other industries.
He advised potential car buyers to let go of their dream cars and search for available alternatives. He also recommended not fixating on specific car models or features, such as colors. Additionally, he urged buyers in the used car market to thoroughly inspect the vehicle’s condition at specialized centers before making a purchase and to avoid rushing into selling their current cars if they still serve their purpose.
Experts predict that the current recession, declining sales, and rising car prices will continue until the end of the first quarter of 2024.
During the first half of this year, car sales in various sectors, including private cars, buses, and commercial vehicles, reached 36,845 units, compared to 122,318 units during the same period in 2022, reflecting a decrease of 69.8%.
The total sales loss between the first half of 2022 and the present reached 85,473 cars, due to the consecutive challenges faced by the market.

How can the shortage of electronic chips in the car industry be resolved, according to Abu El Magd
Decline is primarily due to the shortage of electronic chips, which are an essential component of modern cars. The scarcity of these chips has made it difficult for car dealers to provide vehicles with the latest specifications and advanced technologies.
Abu El Magd explained that this crisis is not limited to Egypt alone, as many countries around the world have been affected. The pandemic, along with the restrictions imposed by governments to control its spread, has led to the suspension of chip production in numerous factories.
The President of the Car Traders Association also pointed out that this crisis has resulted in a significant increase in car prices. Dealers are forced to import electronic chips from abroad at high prices, directly affecting the prices of cars available in the Egyptian market.
Abu El Magd emphasized the need for urgent measures to resolve this crisis, including encouraging investment in local chip manufacturing, as well as providing support and facilitations for dealers to import chips at reasonable prices.
In conclusion, the President of the Car Traders Association stated that resolving this crisis will contribute to the stability of the Egyptian car market and improve the economic conditions for both dealers and consumers alike.
