It probably sounds all too familiar to you: you’re on your period and you’re really craving good food. We all suffer from this sometimes, but why exactly is it that you are more hungry during your period? We explain it to you!
There is a reason behind the hunger you experience when you have your period.
More hungry during your period
Women are generally more hungry when they have their period. You must have craved chocolate during that monthly period as if your life depended on it. While you may feel guilty about this, there’s no need to. It is not at all surprising that you are extra hungry and we will explain why.
It is super normal to be extra hungry the days before and during your period. This is because your progesterone hormone is more dominant at this time of your cycle, while your estrogen levels decrease. These hormone fluctuations can also make you feel sleepier and more prone to mood swings.

Eating routine
During the luteal “premenstrual” phase, your body prepares for your next period. Then the endometrium builds up. In this phase there is a great demand in your body for energy from nutrients and food to have enough strength to rebuild this endometrium. This can cause your body to crave more fat and carbohydrates.
This is not a bad thing at all, but it is wise to keep in mind that you must feed your body with nutritious food throughout your cycle. Think of whole grains, fruit, vegetables, lean proteins, seeds, nuts and legumes. So definitely eat what you crave, but be careful not to do so throughout your cycle. Variation in your diet is a real must to keep your body healthy.
