Tesla is not only far ahead of all other manufacturers in terms of electric cars. Also at autonomous driving the lead over VW, Toyota and Co. is enormous. And now comes the next bad news for the car companies. Because Tesla apparently made the next breakthrough: “I am very confident that Level 5 or full autonomy will be achieved and I think this will happen very quickly,” said Tesla boss Elon Musk in an interview at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai.

Experts are skeptical
Level 5 in autonomous driving means that the car takes over all driving functions, while the driver and front passenger become passengers. The current status is in level 2 – also due to legal requirements. The car can brake, steer and accelerate independently. However, the driver must keep his hand on the wheel and drive the car.
When exactly the completely autonomous car comes is uncertain. Experts are skeptical of what the Tesla boss says. They expect that it could take a few more years for autonomous cars to be taken for granted on the streets. But a visionary like Musk cannot be stopped from that.
