Ustica, missing fishing boat: fished the corpse of a 26 year old. We are looking for the father and the cousin

Drama in the Mediterranean: a fishing boat – the «Nuova Iside» »- has been missing since yesterday with three people on board off the coast of Ustica. The research led to the finding of the corpse of a twenty-six year old, Vito Lo Iacono. The fishermen had gone out Wednesday, at night, to be able to resume their work, after the limitations imposed by the lockdown. The discovery of the corpse came thanks to the work of the Coast Guard. Research is now focused on the discovery of Matteo Lo Iacono (53 years old), the father of the young man who died at sea, and Giuseppe Lo Iacono (thirty-three year old and cousin of Vito).

The route and the research

The fishing boat had started its journey from the small port of Terrasini. In the maritime space from San Vito Lo Capo (in the Trapani area) to the island of Ustica – in the Palermo area – the research involves two patrol boats, a captain’s helicopter and an air force helicopter. The oceanographic research vessel Urbano Monti is also involved in this area.

The pain of the mayor

Pain and anxiety in the town of Terrasini (center of Palermitano). The mayor Giosue Maniaci has thus expressed the pain of his community: «It is a tragedy. They went out on a fishing trip. They were waiting for the lockdown to end in order to start working again and bring bread home. Instead at the first exit the sirocco made them difficult. We are all very worried. They are expert sailors, but perhaps they did not foresee this sudden change of direction of the wind. Matteo’s father was an owner and had several fishing boats. The sea conditions, even today, do not help research ». In Sicily the climatic conditions see alongside a hot record that touches 40 degrees, also a strong wind at sea which makes the search for the missing even more difficult.
