USA: Donald Trump complains about planned “Black Lives Matter” lettering in New York

US President Donald Trump has never shown special appreciation for the “Black Lives Matter” movement – and is now complaining about a lettering planned on Fifth Avenue in New York. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced last week that the street directly in front of the Trump Tower in central Manhattan should be extensively painted with the slogan “Black Lives Matter”. Trump called the lettering in a similar form in front of the White House a “symbol of hatred”.

He criticized the city with a “big, expensive, yellow sign denigrating the luxury road” and at the same time reducing the police budget by a billion dollars.

The city council made this decision early on Wednesday morning. There should not be any job cuts; the cut from around six to around five billion dollars is primarily due to changes in administration and work organization. For example, around 5,300 police officers in schools will fall under the responsibility of the educational department in the future.

Racist statements and criticism of “Black Lives Matter”

Trump claimed in his tweet that de Blasio hated the city police. The police continued to “vividly” remember swear songs against them, the president continued. The calls he quoted had already been recorded in protests in Minnesota in 2015.

Trump had already made several racist comments in the past and had also criticized the “Black Lives Matter” movement. However, a clear majority of the US population supports the large-scale protests against racism and police violence that began after the death of African-American George Floyd.
