Coach found alive in collapsed school gym in China

Eleven people have died after the roof of a middle school gym collapsed in Heilongjiang province in northeast China, Chinese state media reported.

The school is located in the industrial district of Qiqihar City, and the women’s volleyball team was practicing in the gym at the time.

Although it has not yet been officially confirmed, witnesses told local media that many of the victims were students.

Parents who heard the news flocked to a nearby hospital and are waiting for news.

There were 19 people in the gym at the time of the collapse, of which only 8 survived.

As a result of a preliminary investigation, investigators determined that perlite, a type of volcanic glass illegally piled up on the roof of the gym, absorbed rainwater and eventually collapsed around 3:00 pm on the 23rd (local time).

Chinese state radio reported that rescuers searching through the wreckage heard the coach of the middle school’s girls’ volleyball team calling students by name.

Meanwhile, while the rescue operation continued until the morning of the 24th, parents raised questions about the lack of proper communication with school officials.

The man in the video, which quickly spread on social media, said, “They say my daughter is dead, but we couldn’t even see her. All the children who were taken to the hospital had mud and blood on their faces,” he said. “I begged them to be identified. What if the (dead) child is not my child?”

He added, “Now, 4, 5 or even 6 hours have passed since the children were transported to the hospital. [당국은] “What are you doing?” he pointed out, “the medical team is not communicating with the parents about the situation of the rescue operation.”

Also, this man said, “There are elderly adults at home. It is a situation where we need to help these people mentally (to accept the death of a family member). Here are doctors, police and government officials. But we haven’t heard anything.”

Lax Safety Standards and Enforcement are One of the Reasons for Frequent Occupational Accidents in China

Meanwhile, safety accidents are common in China, and lax safety standards and crackdowns are pointed out as the cause.

For example, in June, an explosion at a barbecue restaurant in northwestern China killed at least 31 people. A preliminary investigation revealed that at the time of the explosion, a restaurant employee was replacing a malfunctioning valve on a liquefied gas tank.

In April, a fire broke out at a hospital in Beijing, killing 29 people, with some survivors desperately jumping out of windows to escape.
