Three priests arrested and charged with crimes of a sexual nature

The Major Crimes Investigation Service said in a press release that it had arrested Jean-Maurice O’Leary, 82, Claude Gariépy, 73 and another 93-year-old man.

The suspects were arrested in Joliette, Montreal and Rigaud. They face counts of gross indecency and indecent assault on boys.

According to Sergeant Ingrid Asselin, each religious was targeted by two counts in relation to actions taken on a different victim.

The spokesperson refuses to name the congregation to which the priests belong.

The events alleged against them took place between 1953 and 1982. The acts committed took place in Rawdon, Montreal and Havre-Saint-Pierre, on the North Shore.

Active in various educational establishments across the province, the priests were “responsible for the education and supervision of underage victims”, according to the provincial police force, which is continuing its investigation into this case.

The Sûreté du Québec announced on June 23 the arrest of five religious, all members of the Clerics of Saint-Viateur, in a residence of their congregation in Joliette, also accused of sexual acts against young boys.

Anyone who has information about the suspects is invited to contact the Sûreté du Québec Criminal Information Center at 1 800 659-4264.
