The privilege of confining yourself on a private street in Barcelona

“Do not pass, respect the confinement of the neighbors,” reads a sign on a barrier formed by a rope on Aiguafreda street in Barcelona.

Another sign on the facade of one of the houses, at the beginning of this road, makes it clear to any passerby that it is a “Private Street”.

“The paradigm of confinement, now more than ever the privilege of the precious discreet private street, with intimacy, history, flowers and laundries, in Horta”, describes the author of the photograph Sergio Sese Sanjuan when sharing it in Las Fotos de the Readers of La Vanguardia.

The Barcelona City Council explains that “calle de Aiguafreda is a narrow alley where there is a group of small houses, many of which still conserve water wells and some laundries, which, according to tradition, were used to wash well-to-do people Barcelona and that they are the architectural remains of a way of life of the so-called ‘Horta laundress industry’ ”.

“A tradition that, they say, comes from the 17th century, when in walled Barcelona and with a lack of water and space, the bourgeoisie decided to give the laundry to the laundresses of Horta, a service that gradually increased until it arrived , at the beginning of the 18th century, to eighty small industries that on Monday collected the clothes and returned them on Saturdays after an extensive cleaning process, a practice that lasted until the beginning of the 20th century ”, details the district of Horta-Guinardó in their website.

Despite the “private street” sign, this place in Horta that seems to have stopped in time is a point of attraction for tourists under normal conditions, that is, outside the times of the pandemic. This has led neighbors to ask for respect for residents.

And, in the coronavirus era, as can be seen in the photograph shared by Sergio Sese, the confinement of the street has been total, becoming truly private.
