“Despite the gradual cooling of the market, the year 2019 pushed the results of the Czech automotive industry to new highs, when total sales increased again and for the fourth year in a row exceeded the trillion crowns,” said the president of the association Bohdan Wojnar.

“It simply came to our notice then. The coronavirus pandemic has caused sales of companies in the automotive industry to fall by as much as CZK 150 billion, and this loss will deepen further. For this year, we estimate a drop in vehicle production of around 20 percent, “he added.

Last year, vehicle manufacturers themselves increased sales by 6.5 percent to 658 billion crowns, but sales of parts manufacturers by four percent decreased – to 441 billion crowns. Revenues of companies in the area of research and development and services increased by 1.6 percent to 25.3 billion crowns last year.

Last year, carmakers produced 1,427,563 passenger cars, which is 0.7 percent less than in the previous record year. According to the association, 300 fewer vehicles will be produced this year.

Last year, Škoda Auto increased its production by 2.5 percent to a record 907,942 cars. Sales in Europe helped the carmaker in particular. Kolín’s TPCA maintained production at the previous level of 210,000 cars, and at the Hyundai company in Nošovice, production fell by nine percent to 309,500 vehicles, which is related, among other things, to the cessation of production of the ix20 model.

The number of employees in automotive companies increased by 1,000 to 133,000 people last year. The average wage in this sector increased by six percent to 43,949 crowns. Overall, it was 29 percent above the average wage in the Czech Republic.
