Chernobyl nuclear accident

The reactor number 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded on April 26, 1986. According to some estimates, up to three-quarters of Europe has been infected. Authorities have evacuated hundreds of thousands of people after the accident and a large area of more than 2,000 square kilometers has been abandoned.

Three other reactors continued to operate after the tragedy. The latter was arrested in 2000, marking the end of all industrial activity in Chernobyl.
