The Flemish directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who had great success earlier this year Bad Boys for Life, are going to make a drama series about Islamic funerals for Netflix. The eight-part series Soil is recorded in Brussels.
Soil is about the young Ishmael, who runs a repatriation company for funerals abroad with his sister. They come up with the idea of bringing Moroccan soil to Belgium, in order to make Islamic funerals easier. However, their trade in land appears to have unforeseen consequences.
El Arbi and Fallah explain that the new series is “very recognizable to us as Muslims and Moroccans”. In addition, they let us know that the theme around family and loss also ensures a universal character.
“It is itchy to be back on a set in Brussels,” say the directors. “The place where it all started for all of us.”
The filmmakers became familiar with the crime drama, among other things Black, about the love between two members of rival gangs in Brussels. Later they made gangster movie Patser, which also featured Ali B.
In early 2020, El Arbi and Fallah released their first Hollywood film. Bad Boys for Life is the most visited movie of the year so far. In May, it was announced that they both Bad Boys 4 as the fourth movement in the Beverly Hills Copseries.
