SESARAM reveals that 212 smoking cessation consultations were held from 1 January to 27 May

According to SESARAM, since the 1st of January and until the 27th of May 2020 this year, 212 smoking cessation consultations have been carried out. At SESARAM, there are 13 health centers that provide the population with a smoking cessation consultation, in addition to yet another possibility made through the Pulmonology Service at the Hospital dos Marmeleiros.

Regarding the primary care network, that is, health centers, there were 982 consultations registered in the same period.

The smoking cessation consultation is a multidisciplinary consultation, consisting of a doctor, nurse, psychologist and nutritionist.

The nurses carried out 2,440 consultations in the various health centers in the region. Nutritionists (at Bom Jesus and Nazaré health centers) had 94 technical consultations.

In 2020, the theme of World Day is ‘Protecting youth from manipulation by industry and preventing them from using tobacco and nicotine’.

To mark this date, SESARAM considers it necessary to recall the negative impact that tobacco consumption has.

Tobacco is responsible for about 85% to 90% of lung cancer cases, so it is essential that health professionals are committed to smoking cessation, not only taking the example, but encouraging smokers to stop smoking.

World No Tobacco Day was created by member countries of the World Health Organization in 1987, with the main objective of raising awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco and the risks for passive smokers.
