GTT Communications reveals the results of a market study carried out in November 2019 and indicating that 96% of IT decision-makers had decided to develop their corporate network in 2020, with security as the number one driver. This independent study carried out with 1,483 IT decision-makers in 12 countries, outlines the key trends and factors for 2020, and shows the important role that the network plays in supporting growth objectives.

Before the upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, companies were confident in the future, 98% of the decision-makers questioned predicted their business growth in 2020. 66% wanted to invest in updating their networks to support constant innovation in services and technologies and 30% wanted to develop their infrastructure in order to meet the growing demand for network capacity. With this crisis where networks have been called upon more than ever, we can bet that investment is maintained, even reinforced. Digital transformation is more than ever a growth issue.

The study reveals that SD-WAN could prevail in 2020, 68% of the organizations questioned considering implementing a hybrid WAN (with SD-WAN) or having planned an SD-WAN strategy for 2020. The objective Number 1 of the decision makers questioned, with 31% of the vote, is to improve security, protect the information transported on the public internet with the parameters of existing security protocols. The other motivations are then the improvement of the user experience (24%), the customer experience (23%), performance (23%), flexibility (22%), control (22%) , confidence in network performance (21%), speed (21%), cost reduction (21%), increased agility (21%), resilience (20%), and reducing complexity (17%).

In Switzerland, the top 3 arguments to switch to SD-WAN are the need to increase control (49%), improvement of the employee experience (48%) and improvement of the customer experience (46%).

When asked, “what are the main challenges for your corporate network?”, The top 3 is, globally: security, network reliability / availability and bandwidth.

Security is also cited as the first obstacle to their digital transformation by professionals in industry (38%), distribution (35%), professional services (32%) and IT (32%).

“The ability of SD-WAN to improve security by ensuring that the public internet operates within the parameters of existing security protocols and its capacity to disseminate new security policies in the network are factors of adoption” notes Santiago Caneiro, Swiss Director of GTT.
