To date, the largest fine in Latvia has been imposed on the e-commerce company “Shopping Service” – 150 thousand euros – in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation. The portal “Delfi” evaluates the consistency of the application of fines and the amount of fines in Latvia, as well as the factors influencing it. According to experts, such a large fine is considered an exceptional case in Latvia for the time being, however, it does not exclude the possibility that similar cases may occur in the future.
The penalty was applied at the end of 2019 for illegal activities with personal data, explains the State Data Inspectorate (DSI). The decision was taken by the DSI on 8 November last year, which was subsequently challenged by the company, and on 22 November of the same year, Shopping Service was declared insolvent and an administrator was appointed.
