Coronavirus in hairdressing salon. A stylist displaying symptoms of the coronavirus worked for eight days at a Great Clips hair salon in Missouri, and state health authorities believe about 91 people among clients and coworkers would be exposed.

This case puts in the forefront of public opinion the consequences that the reopening of public places after weeks of restrictions may have on a new spread of the coronavirus in the United States.

According to the director of the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, Clay Goddard, about 84 clients received services from the Great Clips stylist and, in addition, seven coworkers of the infected were notified that they were exposed to the virus.

It is unclear when the stylist tested positive, but the infection is believed to have occurred while traveling. The stylist worked from May 12 to last Wednesday, authorities reported. By then, businesses such as barber shops and beauty salons were allowed in the state.

“The individual and his clients carried facial protection. The 84 clients who were potentially directly exposed will be notified by the Health Department and offered to be tested, as are the seven workers, ”the Springfield-Greene Health Department said in a statement.

“We hope in the department that because everyone was wearing facial protection during the exposure time, we will not have additional cases,” the statement added.

Goddard did not elaborate on the identity or the current health condition of the stylist. He said health officials have contacted those who were exposed to tell them that the employee had an impeccable record that may have made follow-up possible.

But he warned about the risks of overwhelming resources.

“I’m going to be honest with you: we can’t have many more of these,” he said at a press conference. “We cannot make this a regular habit or our capacities as a community will be strained.”

Health officials said the stylist also visited a Dairy Queen, a Walmart, and a CVS pharmacy. Those who visit these sites were urged to be alert to the symptoms of the coronavirus.

Goddard said that he is satisfied with the deep cleaning measures taken by Great Clips and added that he considers it a safe business.
