Rafael Nadal returns to the Dubai Open 15 years later

Rafa Nadal outlines his calendar for the start of 2023. After playing in the United Cup and defending his title at the Australian Open, he will be in Dubai Open, from 27 February to 4 March. He returns to this tournament having not played since 2008.

Nadal won this event in 2006 when he defeated Roger Federer 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the final. The following year, he had a bye in the quarterfinals after losing to Mijal Youzhny 7-6, 6-3. His last appearance was in 2008. He also lost in the quarterfinals, this time, to Andy Roddick 7-6, 6-2.

“As one of the most recognizable personalities in world sport and one of the most decorated players to ever grace tennis, we are absolutely delighted to welcome Rafa back to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after 15 years. The last time Rafa played in Dubai he had won three Grand Slams. He returns having amassed more Grand Slam titles than any other male player in history,” said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice President and CEO of Dubai Duty Free.

Nadal’s roadmap for the first three months of 2023 also includes the exhibition match in Vegas against Carlos Alcarazscheduled for March 5, and the presence at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 from March 8 to 19.
