The presidential candidate put forward by the party NasDem and PKB Anies Baswedan announced the list of members of the Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar Winning National Team (AMIN National Team) for the 2024 presidential election on Tuesday (14/11).
On the list, there is the name of the famous businessman Thomas Trikasih Lembong or Tom Lembong. He was appointed as one of the co-captains in the Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar Winning National Team (AMIN National Team) for the 2024 presidential election.
He and 11 other co-captains will assist the work of the AMIN National Team Chair Marshal TNI (Ret.) Muhammad Syaugi Alaydrus.
“The next co-captain is Mr. Thomas Trikasih Lembong. He is a senior economist from Indonesia, a graduate of Harvard University in America (United States),” said Anies when announcing the list of the national winning team, Tuesday (14/11).
“A professional who has had a lot of experience in the world of investment, domestic and foreign banking. He was minister of trade from 2015-2016, and also head of the investment coordinating body (BKPM) from 2016-2019,” continued Anies.
So who exactly is Thomas Lembong that Anies can trust?
Citing various sources, Tom was born on March 4, 1971. He earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture and governance.
After graduating, he worked in Morgan Stanley’s Equity Division in New York and Singapore in 1995. He then became an investment banker at Deutsche Securities Indonesia in 1999-2000.
Tom’s career track is impressive. Tom worked at Deutsche Bank in Jakarta for the 1998-1999 period.
At that bank, he was tasked with working on the recapitalization and merger of Bank Bumi Daya, Bank Eksim, Bank Dagang Negara and Bank Bapindo into Bank Mandiri.
He also served as Senior Vice President and Head of the Division responsible for restructuring and settling the Salim Group’s obligations to the state due to the collapse of BCA Bank in the 1998 monetary crisis.
Tom was also trusted as division head and senior vice president at the National Banking Restructuring Agency (BPPN) for the 2000-2002 period.
At that time, IBRA was under the Ministry of Finance and Bank Indonesia (BI), which was tasked with recapitalizing and restructuring the Indonesian banking sector after experiencing the financial crisis in 1998.
After that, Tom moved to Farindo Investments in 2002-2005.
He is one of the founders, also Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner at Quvat Management. It is a private equity fund company founded in 2006.
Tom was also listed as president commissioner at PT Graha Layar Prima or Blitz Megaplex in 2012-2014.
As Anies said, Tom Lembong is Jokowi’s former ‘assistant’ in the cabinet. Not only that, he also wrote several of Jokowi’s speeches.
He entered the world of politics in 2013 as an economic advisor and speechwriter for the then Governor of DKI Jakarta, Jokowi. This role was continued throughout Jokowi’s first term as President.
When Jokowi was president, Tom was appointed by Jokowi as minister of trade in 2015-2016. He was trusted to enter the cabinet again by serving as Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) in 2016-2019, which has now changed its name to the Ministry of Investment.
Tom is the man behind the scenes who wrote some of Jokowi’s most iconic speeches. One of them is the “Game of Thrones” speech that Jokowi read at the IMF-World Bank meeting in Bali in 2018.
He was also the author of the “Thanos” speech that Jokowi read at the World Economic Forum.
Currently, Tom serves on the International Advisory Board of the Institute for International Strategic Studies (IISS) in London and the International Advisory Board of Plastic Omnium, an automotive components company in France.
In August 2021, Anies, who was then Governor of DKI Jakarta, appointed Tom as Chairman of the Board of PT Jaya Ancol, the only Provincial Government-Owned Enterprise in Indonesia that is listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI).
After that, Tom founded the Consilience Policy Institute which officially operates in Singapore. This institution is a think tank that advocates internationalist and reformist economic policies in Indonesia.
Thanks to his hard work, Tom won a number of prestigious awards on the world stage. He was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2008.
Additionally, Tom was awarded the Asia Society Australia-Victoria Distinguished Fellowship in 2017.
Then in 2020, Tom received the Order of Diplomatic Service Merit, First Class Second Grade or Gwanghwa Medal from South Korea.
