Pride Day: they raised a wrong flag and had to remove it due to a protest by Malvinas veterans

The tribute that the Municipality of Córdoba had planned for Pride Day, was involved this weekend in more than one controversy.

This Friday, the mayor of the city, Martin Llaryora, announced through their social networks raising the flag of sexual diversity on the main flagpole of Sarmiento Park, the largest in Córdoba, as a sign of the “firm commitment” that its management has in “building a society that is more inclusive, egalitarian and respectful every day” and in commemoration of the International Day of Pride LGBTIQ +, which was celebrated this Sunday.

In his message, Llaryora also indicated that the banner would flap permanently from that day on in the emblematic park.

However, criticism was not long in coming. First of all, many Twitter users began to point out in the comments to the village chief that The flag that the Municipality had raised was not the rainbow flag of the LGBT collective, which has six colored bands, but that of the city of Cuzco, Peru, which has seven, and is also a symbol of cooperativism.

The original flag, created in San Francisco in the 1970s, did have eight colors, but due to the difficulty of making it, they were removed, leaving the flag with six stripes: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. After criticism, the Cordoba authorities decided to rectify their error and hoisted the original LGBT flag. But the official messages and photos with the wrong flag were published that way on social networks.

On Saturday, however, there was another controversy. The permanent replacement of the Argentine flag by the multi-colored flag sparked strong criticism from a group of former Falklands fighters, that this Saturday they approached the plaza to lower the flag and vandalize the plaque that the Municipality had arranged in the place.

“We, as war veterans, as citizens and as Argentines, have to respect our homeland. We do not consider that our flag has to be removed to put another one ”, said two war veterans who had approached the place to remove the flag. At that time there were insults and pushes with the neighbors who opposed the protest and the Police had to intervene.

“We saw two men and a lady trying to lower it (to the flag). They did it and almost set it on fire and cut it ”, recounted Maximiliano Campana, a neighbor who witnessed the riot, told String 3. “We were stunned because we think that as a society we must go a long way, respect minorities and equality because not everyone thinks the same way.” The prosecutor Raúl Garzón intervened in the case and ordered to investigate and identify those who caused damage to the mast to be able to impute them. “Really painfully there were discussions, a broken plate and some injured police personnel who intervened so that this did not reach the elderly,” he said.

“I want them not to give the false discussion of whether a flag yes or no, because that is not what we should discuss. The discussion that we must give ourselves is that of inclusion and equality, ”said Miguel Siciliano, Secretary of Government of the city. “Was this discussion really about the flag or because it does not reflect sexual minorities? What if we had put up the flag of the Vatican or the volunteer firefighters? ”, expressed the official.

However, the local government anticipated that the decision that the flag be permanently on the mast would be reviewed and this Monday morning the Argentine flag was raised again in its place. “We have shown that we are far from being a society that accepts minorities. It has left us a taste of sadness ”Siciliano pointed out.
