The OnePlus Nord is the new attempt by OnePlus in the mid-range smartphone segment. The manufacturer wants to offer the public again affordable mobiles after increasing the prices of devices in its main range, which has been redirected to premium. OnePlus has made itself known to the general public thanks to its “flagship killers”, smartphones offering performance close to the high-end, but at a contained price. So far, the manufacturer has strayed from this model only once: in 2015, the OnePlus X was launched, a mid-range oriented device at low prices. A failure for the brand, which has never repeated the experience.

But while the manufacturer markets increasingly premium smartphones and therefore more and more expensive, as evidenced by the price of the recent OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, it was at the same time beginning to abandon what differentiated it from competitors like Samsung, Apple or Huawei. To fill this gap, OnePlus retries in 2020, five years later, a new experience in the mid-range with the OnePlus Nord, the supposed name of its next mobile (long identified as the OnePlus Z, or even before the OnePlus 8 Lite ). A way to tickle brands like Xiaomi or Realme on the price-quality ratio.

???? What is the price of the OnePlus Nord?

After months of leaks, it’s now official: OnePlus will sell smartphones at a lower price than its flagships in the main series. ” I am very pleased to announce that we will be offering the premium experience you expect from OnePlus on a new range of more affordable smartphones. I know this is something that many of you have wanted for a long time“, Said Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, in a message posted on the brand forum.

He was not more specific as to the price at which the OnePlus Nord will be sold. As a reminder, the launch price of the OnePlus 8 is 699 euros in its most basic version, but it can reach 999 euros for the best equipped variant of the OnePlus 8 Pro. To win back consumers on a low budget, OnePlus will drop well below these prices. It is unthinkable to see the OnePlus Nord being offered at more than 500 euros.

Several sources even suggest a price range included between 300 and 400 euros, with probably configuration variants in terms of memory to cover a wider price range.

???? When is the OnePlus Nord coming out?

The presentation date of the OnePlus Nord has been set for July 10, 2020 and will take place in India. The smartphone is expected to hit the market soon after. We do not know what it is about Europe. Will the old continent be entitled to its own (virtual) conference announcement thereafter or will the mobile come out directly, mystery to date.

What is certain is that we should not wait long before seeing the OnePlus Nord land on our territory. Pete Lau has indeed indicated that the two priority markets for the exit of the device are India and Europe. And the brand will want to space the arrival of the OnePlus Nord with that of the OnePlus 8T and 8T Pro expected for the month of October anyway. It is therefore almost certain that the OnePlus Nord will be available in France before the start of the school year.

???? What does the OnePlus Nord look like?

The OnePlus Nord should not use the codes of the brand’s latest smartphones. At the back, we should find a triple photo sensor positioned vertically in the upper left corner of the mobile, while OnePlus often prefers to center its modules in the middle of the mobile. At the front, the punch makes the reverse journey compared to what we have with the OnePlus 8 series. From the upper left corner, it is moved in the axis of the screen. It should be wide enough since it houses not one, but two photo sensors.

The fingerprint reader is integrated into the screen, this feature popularized in particular by OnePlus is increasingly offered on mid-range devices. The OnePlus Nord is of course equipped with a port USB-C, but skips the 3.5mm audio jack. Recently, OnePlus has started to certify its smartphones for water and dust resistance, which the manufacturer has refused to do so far. While the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro have IP68 protection, the OnePlus Nord should be content with an IP53 certification.

Despite its price, the OnePlus 8 Nord should not be “cheap”, far from it. It would be entitled to an aluminum alloy chassis with a glass protection on the back. The edges will be very curved, but the screen will be completely flat. Inevitably, there will be slightly thicker borders on this model than on the manufacturer’s high-end smartphones.

???? What is its screen size?

OnePlus should make few compromises with regard to the screen on this mid-range. The leaks assure us that the mobile is equipped with a 6.55 inch AMOLED panel (or 6.4 inches depending on the source) with a 20: 9 ratio and FHD + 1080p definition. All with a refresh rate of 90 Hz for better fluidity on the screen. Very interesting characteristics for this price range.

To protect what looks like a beautiful slab, OnePlus would bet on a Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

???? What is the technical data sheet for the OnePlus Nord?

If Xiaomi or Realme manage to equip mid-range smartphones with the best chips on the market, OnePlus preferred to revise its ambitions down in terms of SoC in order to keep a low price without having to find compromises on other elements, such as screen or materials. So this is the Snapdragon 765G from Qualcomm engraved in 7nm which was chosen for the OnePlus Nord.

A SoC less powerful than the Snapdragon 865, but which remains very solid and which offers largely sufficient performance for the majority of users. OnePlus is also changing its strategy. The manufacturer has always bet on selling some of the fastest smartphones at a lower price. With this new smartphone, it seems to favor other aspects.

Note that the Snapdragon 765G allows a compatibility with 5G network thanks to its X52 modem. It was also designed to improve graphics rendering and artificial intelligence capabilities over the standard Snapdragon 765. Finally, the chip supports 10-bit HDR. So we’re on the very top of the mid-range basket here.

On the memory side, several variants should be marketed. The basic version would already be rather generous with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage space. A model with up to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory has also been identified.

???? Battery and charging

Information differs about the capacity of the battery. Two data stand out: 4000 mAh or 4300 mAh. In the first case it would be okay, in the second it starts to get very attractive.

All sources agree, however, that the technology of recharge rapide Warp Charge 30W will be available on the OnePlus Nord. Enough to regain hours of use in just a few minutes of charge. It’s great functionality for a smartphone at this price.

By cons, not surprisingly, the mobile ignores wireless charging. It would have been surprising to be entitled to it when OnePlus has always considered this feature as a luxury that we can do without so as not to increase the price of products. The OnePlus 8 Pro is also to date the only smartphone of the brand to benefit from wireless charging.

???? Camera

One of the great unknowns of OnePlus Nord is played on the photo part. If a large part of the sensor data sheet has leaked, one wonders whether software optimization will be available and how the mobile will behave in difficult situations (low light, quality of autofocus with moving subject … ). Even the high-end of the brand sometimes fish about it, OnePlus is struggling to rise to the level of Samsung and Huawei. To answer these questions, you will have to wait to take the device in hand. In the meantime, here’s what the leaks tell us about the OnePlus Nord photo setup.

A 64 MP main sensor with f / 2.0 aperture and phase detection autofocus is expected. It would be supported by a wide-angle module of 16 MP f / 2.2 and a macro objective of 2 MP f / 2.4. No telephoto for powerful zooms or ToF for better management of the depth of field (especially useful for portrait mode). It will be possible to take pictures in HDR and in panorama mode. For video, the OnePlus Nord should allow filming in 4K at 30 fps or in 1080p at 30 fps. We don’t know anything about a possible slow motion feature at the moment.

For selfies, OnePlus would bet on a dual sensor 32 MP f / 2.0 + ultra wide-angle 8 MP f / 2.2 for taking quality photos without having to stretch your arm too much. A feature that may interest young people.
