President apologizes for breaking restaurant curfew

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen was surprised at a Viennese restaurant after the curfew imposed as part of the gradual reopening of cafes and restaurants after the coronavirus epidemic.

The ecological president himself confirmed the information published in the newspaper ‘Kronen Zeitung’ and apologized this Sunday, ensuring that he had not seen the time pass while he and his wife, Doris Schmidauer, were chatting in this outdoor restaurant.

Police overview

Police also confirmed that they saw Van der Bellen. The couple were still present shortly after midnight, while Austrian catering establishments cannot remain open after 11 p.m., under penalty of heavy fines. These can go up to 30,000 euros under Covid-19 legislation.

The restaurant was however officially closed when the police disembarked.
