Police arrest 38 people in demonstration against lockdown in The Hague | NOW

The police arrested 38 people in The Hague on Saturday during a demonstration against the lockdown, a police spokesman reported talking to NU.nl on Sunday morning.

Initially, a group of thirty people protested at the Koekamp by agreement. Despite the ban, a group of more than eighty sympathizers tried to participate in the demonstration.

The group thus violated the rule that no more than thirty people may come together. The 1.5 meters were also not observed. In the end, 38 arrests were made.

In 28 cases, it concerned a violation of the Public Events Act (WOM), five offenses, and once an obstacle, violation of the Weapons and Ammunition Act and failure to comply with the statutory obligation to identify. Two persons were sent without being prosecuted. According to the police spokesman, none of the suspects have been detained yet.

Demonstration protest against policy during corona crisis

According to calls circulating on Facebook, the demonstration was a cry for freedom and a protest against the cabinet’s current policy in the corona crisis.

It is unclear who initiated the demonstration. The pamphlet circulating on the Internet stated that the aim was to conduct a “peaceful” demonstration. The banners and signs that the demonstrators carried included texts such as “Rot op Rutte3” and “Stop the 1.5 meter madness”.
