Oxford Researchers Say HIV Drug Trial for Patients with COVID-19 is Not Effective

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – A combination of anti-viral drugs as a treatment for Corona Virus COVID-19 patients apparently did not show any healing potential, according to researchers at the University of Oxford. The drug is Kaletra, which is a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, usually used to treat HIV.

Martin Landray, who is the deputy chief investigator of the trial, explained, “The results of this trial, along with other large randomized trials, must be taken into account in the latest guidelines regarding how patients should be treated.”

Lopinavir-ritonavir is said to not mitigate the short-term death rate, shorten hospital time, or inhibit the rate of disease.

These results were obtained from experiments conducted RECOVERY Oxford, which is a large randomized trial involving more than 11,800 patients from all over the UK to evaluate the proposed number of patients with the Corona COVID-19 virus.

In this trial, there were a total of 1,596 patients treated with the combination of lopinavir-ritonavir, and 3,376 patients who were given regular treatment. After being reviewed by an independent committee, these results are announced.

The results of this trial also confirm that lopinavir-ritonavir does not help cure Corona COVID-19 patients, as concluded by a smaller study published in The New England Journal of Medicine previous March edition, as quoted from VOA Indonesia, Tuesday (6/30/2020).
