There are rumors of mounting tension among Formula 1 drivers over Lewis Hamilton’s recent political activism. The six-time world champion has recently increased his support for the Black Lives Matter movement and recently told the other drivers at a meeting in Austria that “silence about racism is generally accomplice.”
The drivers have all agreed to wear ‘End Racism’ T-shirts on the grid on Sunday, but sources suggest at least five refuse to promise to kneel in support of Black Lives Matter. Carlos Sainz told media in Austria, “Not everyone has decided what to do.”
Hamilton is increasing the pressure
It is believed that some drivers are angry with Hamilton’s equation of ‘silence’ on issues of racial politics with an alleged racist element in the paddock.
Hamilton believes that the drivers who do not want to kneel do not want to acknowledge that there is a problem and call his colleagues’ behavior weak. The 35-year-old Mercedes driver says, “Well, we know there is a problem, so we don’t need any experience to prove that there is a problem.”
Magnussen does kneel
Haas driver Kevin Magnussen said, “I plan to kneel, not so much because I support the Black Lives Matter organization, but more because I want to support the global movement against racism and discrimination. I hope no special group or organization own it. “
There are rumors that Kimi Raikkonen and Max Verstappen, among others, would not want to participate.
