Red, yellow, orange and some chocolate at the top. Available in almost every bathroom in summer. This is the traditional ice cream Winnetou. On the market since 1980.

But the name could soon be history. “We are currently examining how our Winnetou ice cream is perceived in today’s context and whether a name change is appropriate,” says a spokeswoman for the manufacturer about “Switzerland at the weekend”.

The manufacturer is Frisco. Until a few years ago, the company was a Nestlé subsidiary. In 2016, the food retailer moved its ice cream business together with the British group R&R Ice Cream to the Froneri joint venture.

Winnetou is still produced in the factory in Goldach SG for the Swiss market. The summer hit is “one of our classics”, as the spokeswoman says. The ice cream is sold over three million times a year.

Hidden genocide
That is why there has been a debate about the cultural heritage of the writer for a long time. “May’s tales are a romanticization of a factually violent racist story,” says Susan Arndt of “Switzerland at the weekend”. She is a professor of English and cultural studies at the University of Bayreuth (D).

“The fact that the colonization of North America was accompanied by a genocide in which 80 to 90 percent of the original population was murdered is completely ignored,” says Arndt. (ise)
