Homans wants five Flemish resolutions on more autonomy o …

Flemish parliament president Liesbeth Homans (N-VA) calls for the over twenty-year-old Flemish resolutions that argue for far-reaching autonomy for Flanders to be explored. She says that in an interview on 11 July, the feast of the Flemish Community.

Tradition has it that the President of the Flemish Parliament will give a speech at the Brussels City Hall on 11 July, in the presence of approximately 600 guests. Due to the corona crisis, this ceremony could not take place this year. Homans therefore chose to give her message in an interview broadcast on the Parliament’s website.

“I think it is important that we can take the fate of the Flemings into our own hands with the Flemish Parliament,” says Homans. “I think July 11 is the momentum as President of the Flemish Parliament to put those five famous resolutions on the table once again, get them up and running and update them.”

Those five resolutions date from 1999. The Flemish Parliament approved them with a view to the next state reform. Among other things, it is argued for more coherent powers, with more financial and fiscal autonomy for Flanders.

Homans gives this message not only because of the Flemish holiday, but also because the federal negotiators (the chairmen of CD&V, Open VLD and MR) have indicated that they want to achieve a breakthrough in government formation by 21 July. “I hope federal negotiators also take into account the importance of speaking about those powers.”

According to Homans, the corona crisis provides momentum. “I think everyone knows and realizes that everything went wrong and that more coherent and homogeneous power packages could have prevented many problems.” According to Homans, transferring powers would be a good thing not only for the Flemish but also for the French speakers.
