Increasing payments in national currencies will be a priority of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship. This is stated in a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry following the meeting of the association.
“Particular emphasis will be placed on increasing the role of the BRICS states in the international monetary and financial system, developing interbank cooperation with an emphasis on increasing settlements in national currencies,” the department said. The priority area of work of the Russian Chairmanship will be the comprehensive implementation of the BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy until 2025, as well as the Action Plan for Innovative Cooperation until 2024.
BRICS is an international organization of the largest states with developing markets and economies: South Africa, India, Brazil, Russia, China. Argentina, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia should join the organization by 2024. However, after the presidential elections in Argentina, the country’s new leader spoke out against joining BRICS. Pakistan has applied to join BRICS in 2024 and is counting on Russian support.
