EU reopens borders to 15 countries, including Morocco: what you need to know

The European Union (EU) decided on Tuesday to lift travel restrictions from July 1 for residents of fifteen third countries including Morocco, we learned from a European source in Brussels.

The list of countries chosen by the EU, which will be evaluated every two weeks, has been drawn up on the basis of criteria linked in particular to the development of the pandemic, the overall management of the health crisis and for economic reasons, we specify from the same source.

Among the selected countries are also Tunisia, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, New Zealand, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand and China, subject to application of reciprocity.

Under EU criteria, which are not, however, binding on member states, selected third countries must show a stable or decreasing trend in new Covid-19 cases during the evaluation period compared to the previous two weeks. .

The assessment also takes into account the overall response to the pandemic, taking into account the information available on testing, surveillance, traceability of contacts, containment, treatment and prevention.

The EU will also take into account reciprocity on a case-by-case basis, the Council of the European Union said in a statement, noting that travel restrictions do not apply to EU citizens and their family members and long-term residents in Europe.

On March 16, the European Commission recommended the temporary restriction of all non-essential travel from third countries to the EU due to the state of health emergency declared following the spread of Covid-19. This restriction was to be gradually lifted by June 30.
