Detroit Lions rookie Jahmyr Gibbs compares NFL training to Nick Saban’s grueling program

The Detroit Lions signed running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. In the meantime, the rookie has been able to get a first impression of working for the franchise – and has drawn an amazing conclusion.

US journalists asked him to compare training with the Lions with the units under Nick Saban, head coach at his ex-college Alabama. According to Gibbs, the NFL coaches try everything to make their players better. Saban, on the other hand, tried to push him and his teammates to the limit.

Lions rookie: Saban tried to kill us

“Under Saban we had to give everything every day. In full gear, two hours in the heat. We can train well here, but they don’t try to kill us. He did it,” said the running back with regard to the most successful US college coach.

Gibbs isn’t the first former Alabama Crimson Tide player to say training in the NFL is easier. For example, Saban is known for putting on a grueling strength and conditioning program and training with full body contact.

Background: The NFL players’ union negotiated to limit player workloads in the offseason and limit physical contact. There are no such rules in college football.
