Daily death toll in Spain drops slightly to 48

Spain has recorded 48 deaths due to the covid-19 pandemic in the past 24 hours, a slight decrease from Friday’s 56, the Spanish Ministry of Health announced today.

According to the daily pandemic balance sheet, the country has accounted for a total of 28,678 deaths since the disease was declared.

According to the figures released, in the country as a whole there are 361 new cases with the disease, bringing to 235,290 the total number of infected people confirmed to date by the PCR test, the most reliable in detecting the new coronavirus.

The daily data also indicates that, in the last 24 hours, 125 patients have been hospitalized, increasing to 124,757 the total number of people who have so far needed to be hospitalized.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez today invited hotel and restaurant professionals to prepare to resume their activity and mainly welcome national tourism, having announced that from July the borders will be open to foreign visitors.

“There will be a tourist season this summer,” Sánchez assured at a press conference where he encouraged owners of bars, restaurants and beach establishments to “prepare to resume their activity within a few days”.

The head of the Spanish executive also said that the professional football championship will resume on June 8.

The Spanish regions hardest hit by the covid-19 pandemic in Madrid, Barcelona and Castile and León are going on Monday to “phase one” of the plan to relieve rigid measures to fight the disease.

These regions, where around 30% of the population of Spain are located, join the others that, for two weeks, have already allowed, for example, the opening of terraces with an occupancy of up to 50% of their capacity or meeting abroad or at the home of up to 10 people, as long as social distancing rules are respected.

The Spanish parliament approved on Wednesday the extension of two more weeks, starting on Sunday and until midnight on June 6, of the state of emergency, in force since March 15, with the aim of fighting against the new coronavirus.

The relief plan for measures to combat the new coronavirus foresees a gradual lifting of the confinement in a series of phases that should end in late June, with the arrival of a “new normality”.

Spain is the second country with the most deaths with covid-19 per million inhabitants (612 deaths), after Belgium (797) and before Italy (541), United Kingdom (541) and France (433), in a list where the United States has 296 and Portugal 128.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 339,000 deaths and infected more than 5.2 million people in 196 countries and territories.

To combat the pandemic, governments sent 4.5 billion people home (more than half of the planet’s population), paralyzing entire sectors of the world economy, in a “great confinement” that several countries have already begun to alleviate in the face of declining prices. new contagions.
