Covid-19 could cause brain damage

Research on the Covid-19 continues. We know that this disease causes respiratory problems. However, researchers have also discovered that it can cause heart and neurological symptoms.

In a recent study published in the journal Brain, scientists have revealed that Covid-19 could also cause serious brain damage. According to them, neurological disorders do not only affect people suffering from a severe form of Covid-19. Patients with moderate symptoms may also be affected by these disorders.

The researchers behind this study sounded the alarm bells and expressed concern that these neurological symptoms could even appear in people healed from Covid-19 years later.

Patients prone to various neurological symptoms

According to this study, some Covid-19 patients suffered from brain edema, accompanied by delusional episodes. Other patients have developed nervous system disorders, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome. In some cases, patients even had a stroke, which could have cost them their lives.

Covid-19 affects the brain like no other virus has done before”said Michael Zandi, one of the study’s co-authors. According to him, these neurological symptoms can appear in any patient of Covid-19.

“You can have severe neurological problems and be very sick, but only have moderate respiratory symptoms. “

A study of 43 people

To carry out this study, the researchers studied the case of 43 patients with Covid-19, aged 16 to 85 years. All of these patients were admitted to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, between April 9 and May 15, 2020.

Of these 43 patients, 10 suffered from severe brain edema, accompanied by delusional episodes. Scientists reported the case of a 55-year-old woman who started acting strange three days after she was released from the hospital. The researchers noted that she had no psychiatric history. According to the patient’s husband, she kept putting on and taking off her jacket. Then she had auditory and visual hallucinations and claimed that she saw lions and monkeys at home.

According to the scientists who conducted this study, it is important to follow up on Covid-19 patients with neurological conditions to prevent possible brain damage.
